Intraoral irrigation with ozonated saline solution under microbubbling as an adjunctive treatment in a pediatric patient with epidermolysis bullosa simplex: case report

Epidermolysis bullosa is a rare genetic disease characterized by extreme fragility of the skin and mucous membranes, with recurrent formation of blisters and erosions, representing a therapeutic challenge, particularly in pediatric dental management.
An observational descriptive study was conducted to evaluate the use of ozonated saline solution under microbubbling with the aim of observing its effectiveness in local application in combination with systemic ozone therapy in its form of rectal insufflation in a case of epidermolysis bullosa.
This is the case of a 7-year-old male patient with a confirmed diagnosis of epidermolysis bullosa simplex and orofacial involvement. The patient was treated at the Tivao ® dental clinic, where he underwent intraoral irrigation with ozonated saline solution at a concentration of 8 ug/mL under micro-bubbling, complemented by the topical application of ozonated oil and 20 sessions of rectal ozone insufflations at immunosuppressive doses..
Four clinical sessions were conducted, resulting in a favorable early clinical response and excellent progression, with monthly follow-up over for one year. No adverse effects were recorded. Ozone therapy proved to be a safe and effective alternative as an adjuvant treatment for this type of patient.
